Welcome to the USA – part 1

The Inner Harbour

The Inner Harbour – Baltimore

So I have started my move to the USA. Basically it will be done in three parts. The first part, the part I am doing just now, is to get set up with a bank account and a mobile phone number. Those were completed within the first couple of days.

I was surprised at how easy it was to set up an account. As I am currently on the East cost and I am moving to the West coast I required a big national bank. So I looked online and made a list: Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Chase. These were in no specific order, and as we happened to drive past a Wells Fargo we stopped in there. I spoke to a very nice man who was an immigrant himself, part of me believes that this helped me, and he proceeded to tell me that it was possible to set up an account even though I did not have a social security number. I had all my documentation with me: passport, bank cards from my last bank, and my work contract. Within a couple of hours, maybe less, I had set up an account with them and walked out with a temporary debit card to tide me over until my real one arrives.

Getting a mobile phone number was just as easy. I noticed that T-mobile was offering a discount pre-paid sim card. Basically it cost 99c + TAX for the sim card, instead of the usual $15. So I had that ordered before I had even left the Bahamas. It arrived the day after I had set up my account and within a short space I had set up my number, with an area code for San Francisco.

The remainder of my time here in the USA will be left sorting out what I have here, throwing away old clothes and items that I no longer need. Obviously, I will still be hanging out and having fun with friends watch my instagram if you want to see what I have been up to.

I will return to the Bahamas in two weeks time, and I will spend two more weeks there diving with friends and hopefully teaching some courses. When I return to the USA part 2 will begin, and then at the beginning of August part 3 will begin as I move to San Francisco.

Hope you’re all having a great summer!
