As I am doing my IDC shortly I am reviewing the 24 skills that must be demonstrated on an Open Water Course. This is so that I have them clearly defined in my head and I know how to do them flawlessly. Here are the skills from Session 5.
21. Vertical Head First Skin Dive
Take a deep breath. Bring your knees up and drop your head into the water. Dive head first without any excessive kicking or arm movement.
22. Swim At Least 15 Meters Underwater On A Single Breath While Skin diving
Take a deep breath. Bring your knees up and drop your head into the water. Dive head first without any excessive kicking or arm movement. Swim for 15 metres underwater, make sure that your fin kick from the hip.
23. Snorkel Clearing Using Blast Method (After ascending from skin dive)
Take a deep breath. Bring your knees up and drop your head into the water. Dive head first without any excessive kicking or arm movement. Look up while ascending so the snorkel is pointing down. Gently exhale through the snorkel and the water will drain out.
24. Snorkel Clearing Using Displacement Method (While ascending from skin dive)
Take a deep breath. Bring your knees up and drop your head into the water. Dive head first without any excessive kicking or arm movement. Whilst ascending look up for obstructions. At the surface look down and strongly exhale through the snorkel to blast clear.
Here’s a video from Utila Dive Centre demonstrating the skills.
